What if you get a million dollars but only for a day..

A Single Parent’s Life in the post It’s Just A Bag disclosed that if she had the money to last a life time, she wouldn’t spend much on a bag. What if you DO have the money, on which things would you spend it with? And how about having the chunks of money for only day, and the succeeding days you’ll be back to normal. What things would you want to have for those succeeding days?
Here’s what I’m doing.
I’m buy a Europe travel guide and book a one month Eurotrip! This is how one of my evenings will look like:

I’ll deposit the payment for all the air transfers, tours and classy hotels with breakfast. The only thing I’ll have to worry then is lunch and dinner. I’ll add five of my friends and pay all their expenses so our gang was complete with spacious room for adventures.
A rough overestimation would be $10,000 per person, so $60,000 for five of us.
Then I’ll grab a house and pay in advance for a solar panel build to free myself of the electricity bill burden. The house I’m eyeing is valued at 585,000. Solar panel installation reportedly costs $70,000 at its height.

I’ll donate $200,000 to charity simply because I have nothing better to spend it with. And the remaining is for Vegas baby. Wouldn’t let this day pass without any fun! And who knows, I could lure more fortune.
It is actually hard to decide what you can spend on a day with a million dollars. I could easily buy a fancy painting, except I appreciate art in any value. Other than travel, that which I wanted most right now, I would go for house and charity. Of course, fun should be in that day so there’s Las Vegas.
How would you spend a million in a day?

Without doing detailed research into exact numbers, I would:
Set up a 2 week cruise for myself and 10 others (friends and family), paying for as much as possible ahead of time, including high-end meals on the ship. $250,000 or so.
Buy a home with the solar set up as well as other options that would reduce my costs. Don’t need a *huge* home, so… $500,000.
Pay off my car. $20,000
Pay for plane tickets to visit my family and friends over the next 2 years. $20,000
Pay off my debts and donate what is left to the ASPCA.
I posted on this same subject. What does a million dollars look like? The music group BareNakedLadies had a song, If I had a million dollars…. Your post, my post, and the song, all have us being the same, but going broke spending it all. It is amazing to blow one million easily just looking at your house idea, must be in California.
Good post. Nothing wrong with dreaming big ehhh.. Man I would just go around the world on a photography cruise. See all the ancient historical sites and own myself a house and a car..
$1 Million? its not alot these days, but heck Majority of the people I know dont even have quarter of a million let alone a million, but yeah .. I will spend it on Stocks, Bonds and Fx, grow it to 2 mil and then split 1 mil to Trust funds and the other on other investments, that way it will double again, then take all that money and build a church and soup kitchen for the poor, ensure the money keeps going therefore I dont need donations. thats how I want to spend my $1 million, I dont need anything on myself cause I would be happy to see so MANY others HAPPY !
1 million in one day…pay off our house (no more mortgage payments) two new vehicles (one for me, one for my spousal equivalent, William), invest so we live off the interest (remember, no house or car payments, so the interest will go farther) give my daughter and mom a little money, set up a fund for my grandson’s college, and then book and pay for Christmas trips for the next few years. The remainder would go be spent to set up charities here in New Mexico.
You beat me on the finishing line …. started working on the same subject yesterday … but not to spend it on a day. So now I have to put that post on ice … and do a bit a rethinking. If I’m going to win a million.. I want more than one. Will only happens once.
So my answer will come with my post. Great post. I think you’re a having Europe too little time, you will be like a Japanese tourist – not able to see much. Only getting more and more stressed by the stop, but to dream doesn’t involve much stress. *smile
For me that would be an easy one. I would buy homes for each of my grown children so they could live mortgage free. Once this was done I too would love a wonderful trip to Vegas.
One of my most desired places to go however is Alaska, one of those cruises on a small ship that lets you venture into the wilderness as it stops along the shore nothing like getting out amongst some wild life to make this ol girls day.
Of coarse making sure I have moved myself to the coast where I can gaze at the ocean I love so much would be a definite must. Who knows maybe even move to Alaska and just dwell in that wilderness for the rest of my days. Not a bad way to live I’d say. Love your thoughts keep them coming, hope you have a grand day indeed!
Assuming my husband and I would still able to retain our incomes, I’d love to drop the entire million on buying some prime property, building a home, and decorating it with all the bells and whistles — no hold back. If there happened to be anything left after exhausting all of our options and making our dream home, I’d invest the rest for retirement. But without looking into any numbers whatsoever, I’d be really curious to see what kind of a home a million could garner.
I’d put into my movie budget (“Shooters Nation”) one and cool glasses, I’d bought myself one more pair of cool shades 🙂
Top 10 Things I’d Do:
1. Pay off my parents’ home and sell it.
2. Buy them a new home.
3. Custom build myself a home.
4. Go on a month long vacation: Italy, Greece, New York, Japan, and home to Jamaica.
5. Pay off my friends’ and my own student loan and credit card bills.
6. Take a all expenses paid trip with my besties.
7. Get my kid brother that Charger he’s been eyeing.
8. Set him up a college fund, no loans.
9. Put money away for my parents retirement.
10. Send my parents and grandma on a nice trip.
Fun question!
I’d support some ministries that I think are doing good work.
Pay off debts.
Fund college accounts for my children.
Get a really good retirement fund going for me and the wife.
Take a super nice vacation and invite some extended fam to join (so they can babysit the kids!) 🙂
I’m definitely going to invest at least half of it in real estate, rental and commercial (including a living space for myself inside a few of the rental properties in different cities so I can travel). I’d use about 5K to market my book and hire a true professional editor and copywriter, then another few grand to start a full-blown website based on the book. I’d then take a grand to expedite my self-credit-restoration efforts. I’d pay off 2 parts of my college loan (not all of it – it’s building my credit). I’ll get my LLC faster. I’d then break off my immediate family with 20K apiece, donate 100K for tides. I have more I’d like to do, including inter-continental dating, but that’s it for now.
I’ve written a whole series of blogs on what I’d do if I were rich and eccentric. I would get a pet elephant, buy medieval weapons and suits of armor and segways for segway jousting, and I’d have a labyrinth built. Hopefully the hypothetical money doesn’t disappear when the day is over, because I’d also like to film a low budget movie, hire scantily clad women to sit in giant martini glasses at my house, and get a composer, choreographer, musicians, and backup dancers to turn my morning routine into a scene from a rock opera. (That’s just the tip of my crazy iceberg.)
In one day.
I would set up a college fund for my future child.
I would make sure I gave to charity.
I would make sure I put some in savings.
Find a way to get a new car and pay off the house.
Then I would just go nuts.
I would book a lot of trips and pay for them that day.
I would try and not loose one second of that day. I would be up for twenty four straight hours spending every drop of that money.
Vegas baby Vegas!
Travel sounds good. Then rest at home and do good work. 🙂
I just want to first say I am so glad I was able to inspire you to write a post and thank you for adnolaging me in it. I am so sorry I haven’t gotten over to comment sooner it has been a crazy time at my house. It slipped my mind.
Didn’t do research into what everything would cost but this is what I would do.
1st Buy a big piece of property somewhere like GA, Tenn, or SC and have me a house costume built for me. I would devid it into areas and have houses built for different family memebers with in reason. I would get a nice new truck. I would also pay the bills ahead by the time it was done. That way every one can calm down.
I would pay for all my kids schooling threw a private school and for collage.
if there was any left I would give it to a research center for kids with autism and some kind of animal rescue place.
Hey, no worries. I hope it helped market you blog as well. Cheers!
Hey, you forgot Stockholm on your trip to Europe, :).
Thanks for linking to my site! If I had a million dollars to spend, I would buy the best apartment it could afford in Berlin and a summer house somewhere in Asia ;D
